Bearcats Earn Pair of Wins Over Newberry at Home

GREENWOOD - Lander softball used timely hitting and dominant relief pitching to sweep Newberry College in a home doubleheader Friday at Doug Spears Field, rallying for a 5-2 win in game one before overcoming an early deficit to claim a 6-3 victory in game two.

The Bearcats improved to 8-4 overall with the sweep, extending their strong early-season form behind contributions throughout the lineup.

Game One: Lander 5, Newberry 2

Lander struck first in the opening inning when Ava Perkins delivered an RBI single to left-center field to score Emily Allen, giving the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead.

Newberry briefly seized momentum in the fourth inning on a two-run home run, but Lander responded immediately. Devon Kokoszka tied the game later in the inning with an RBI single to bring home Isabella Santos.

The Bearcats broke the game open in the sixth inning, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and clutch hitting. Kokoszka came through again with her second RBI single of the game to give Lander the lead. Reagan Hill later stole home, and Allen added an RBI single to center to cap the three-run frame and extend the advantage to 5-2.

Kokoszka led the offensive effort, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Allen paced the lineup with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring once and driving in another. Santos scored twice, and Samantha Bumgarner added a double.

In the circle, Mattye Geddings earned her first win of the season with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits while keeping Newberry off the board. Paige Sherman started the game and allowed two runs over four innings.

Game Two: Lander 6, Newberry 3

Newberry jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings, but the Bearcats answered with a decisive rally in the bottom of the third.

With the bases loaded, Perkins drew an RBI walk to put Lander on the board before Hill delivered a clutch two-run single to tie the game at 3-3.

Lander took control in the fifth inning when Kara VonAchen ripped a two-run double to right-center field, scoring Hill and Bumgarner to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game.

Isabella Santos added insurance in the sixth inning, launching her second home run of the season to left field to extend the lead to 6-3.

Santos turned in a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Hill added two RBIs, while VonAchen drove in two runs with her extra-base hit. Allen also contributed with a two-hit effort, and Bumgarner scored twice.

Anna Phifer earned the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out two. Sherman closed the door with two shutout innings to secure her first save of the season.

Lander returns to Doug Spears Field on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when the Bearcats host No. 6 Francis Marion for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
