Bearcats Earn Redemption Win Over Young Harris in Saturday Split

GREENWOOD - The Lander University softball team earned a 3-1 victory over Young Harris before falling 4-1 to Southern Wesleyan on the final day of the Bri Surrento Kickoff Classic on Saturday at Doug Spears Field.

The split moved the Bearcats to 5-3 overall as Lander bounced back against Young Harris after dropping a matchup to the Mountain Lions the night before.

Game One: Lander 3, Young Harris 1

Lander struck early and never relinquished the lead, scoring twice in the first inning to take control. Samantha Bumgarner delivered an RBI single to right field, and two Young Harris errors allowed Emorie Anderson and Bella Angeli to score and give the Bearcats a 2-0 advantage.

The Bearcats added another run in the third inning when Reagan Hill singled to bring home Angeli and extend the lead to 3-0.

Lander finished with seven hits in the contest, led by Bumgarner and Emily Allen, who each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Hill added an RBI, while Angeli scored twice and drew two walks.

In the circle, Paige Sherman allowed just one run across seven innings and worked out of late pressure to secure the win. She moves to 4-0 on the season, tossing her second complete game of the season.

Young Harris scored its only run in the seventh inning, but Lander's defense held firm to close out the victory.

Game Two: Southern Wesleyan 4, Lander 1

Southern Wesleyan capitalized on defensive opportunities in the third inning, scoring three unearned runs to take an early lead.

Lander answered in the fourth inning when Bumgarner connected on a solo home run to right-center field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Bearcats recorded four hits in the game, including doubles from Ava Perkins and Hill. Allen added a single and a walk as Lander continued to create chances offensively.

Mattye Geddings provided four innings of relief and allowed just one run, but Lander was unable to close the gap. Southern Wesleyan added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the win.

Bumgarner led Lander offensively on the day, recording three hits, two RBIs, and a home run across the two contests. Allen also finished with three hits, while Hill contributed two hits and an RBI.

Lander returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 18, when it travels to Wingate for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
