Bearcats Suffer First Loss of Season at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lander women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-1 on the road to Newberry.

The Bearcats (4-1) claimed the lone point at No. 1 singles, but Newberry secured the doubles point and won five of six singles matches to hand Lander its first setback of the year.

In doubles play, Newberry won the No. 1 and No. 3 matches to claim the doubles point. Renee Dorval and Yui Suzuki defeated Bailee Martin and Evelyn Altmaier, 6-1, at No. 1, while Margarita Roshka and Aina Miralles topped Micaela Pallete and Ella Sowman, 6-3, at No. 3.

Lander's lone doubles win came at No. 2, where Maria Jose Zarza and Thilda Danielsson earned a 7-6, 7-1 victory over Hazel Vernon and Lina Sarhan.

Trailing 1-0 entering singles, Lander looked to rally, but Newberry controlled the courts early.

The Wolves extended their lead to 2-0 with a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, as Roshka defeated Altmaier, 6-2, 6-4. Moments later, Sarhan downed Sydney Caulder, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles to push the advantage to 3-0.

At No. 4 singles, Miralles secured the clinching point for Newberry with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Danielsson, giving the hosts an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

Newberry added to its margin at No. 5 singles, where Dorval defeated Martin, 6-1, 7-5, and at No. 6 singles, Vernon rallied past Sowman, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Lander's lone point came at the top of the lineup. Zarza outlasted Suzuki in a three-set battle at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. With the victory, Zarza improved to 5-0 in singles play this season.

Lander will look to bounce back Thursday, Feb. 26, traveling to Florence, S.C., for a 2 p.m. matchup against Francis Marion.
