Women’s Tennis Tops North Greenville 5-2, Improves to 4-0

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Lander University women's tennis team continued its strong start to the season Tuesday afternoon, defeating North Greenville University 5-2 at the Vance Tennis Complex to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2017.

The Bearcats had to respond early in doubles play. North Greenville took the first match off the court at No. 3, where Andjela Mrvaljevic and Lauren Harrelson earned a 6-0 win.

Lander quickly answered at the top spot, as Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin posted a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles to even the race for the point. The deciding match came at No. 2, where Maria Jose Zarza and Thilda Danielsson delivered a 6-4 win to secure the doubles point and give Lander a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

The Bearcats wasted little time adding to their advantage. Ella Sowman was first off the court in singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 to make it 2-0. North Greenville answered at No. 3, as Adriana Flores defeated Danielsson 6-2, 6-4 to pull within one.

Lander regained control at the top of the lineup. Zarza handled Abigail Watson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to push the lead to 3-1. Shortly after, Altmaier battled through a tight first set before closing out Julia Machado 7-6 (4), 6-1 at No. 2, moving the Bearcats within one point of clinching.

North Greenville extended the match at No. 4, where Mrvaljevic edged Sydney Caulder 6-2, 7-6 (2). But the final word belonged to Lander. At No. 5 singles, Martin rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Mikayla McKenzie 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 in a third-set super tiebreak, sealing the 5-2 victory.

With the win, Lander improves to 4-0, matching the program's best start in nine years and maintaining its early-season momentum.

Lander returns to action Thursday when it travels to face Newberry College in Newberry. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
