Altmaier’s Comeback Clinches 4-3 Victory for Bearcats

GREENWOOD - The Lander University women's tennis team battled from start to finish Wednesday afternoon, earning a 4-3 victory over Coker University at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The win marks the Bearcats' best start since 2017 and the first time the program has opened a season with three consecutive victories since that 4-0 start nine years ago.

Doubles play set the tone for the tightly contested afternoon. Ella Sowman and Micaela Pallete struck first at No. 3 doubles with a 6-3 win to give Lander early momentum. Coker answered at No. 1, where Ilona Hernandez-Sanchez and Noelle D'Angelillo defeated Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin, 6-3, leveling the doubles point.

The deciding match came down to No. 2 doubles. Maria Jose Zarza and Thilda Danielsson outlasted Caroline Myers and Salome Sierra in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), clinching the doubles point for Lander.

In singles, Pallete extended the Bearcats' lead to 2-0 with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Zarza followed at No. 1 with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 win, pushing the advantage to 3-0.

Coker refused to go away. D'Angelillo rallied past Danielsson at No. 3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, before Myers defeated Martin in three sets at No. 4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Semeano then evened the team score at 3-3 with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 comeback over Sydney Caulder at No. 5 singles.

All eyes turned to No. 2 singles, where Altmaier delivered the clincher. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Altmaier regrouped to take a tight second-set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4), before completing the comeback with a 6-3 victory in the third to seal the 4-3 triumph.

Up next, Lander will look to continue its strong start on Tuesday, Feb. 17, traveling to face North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
