Seven-Run Seventh Pushes No. 27 Lander Past No. 17 Belmont Abbey

GREENWOOD, S.C. — The No. 27 Lander baseball team surrendered an early lead and fell behind late, but the Bearcats erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning and added two more in the eighth to defeat No. 17 Belmont Abbey 16-8 in a midweek nonconference matchup Tuesday night at Dolny Stadium.

With the win, Lander improved to 6-1 on the season.

All nine starters reached base, and eight recorded at least one hit. Ryan Hansen went 4-for-5 and scored three runs, while Will McClellan had three hits and a career-high five RBIs. Cooper Backman added three hits, including a home run and a double.

Lander struck first in the opening inning. Hansen tripled to right-center to lead off the game and scored on an RBI single by McClellan. After McClellan stole third, Lowndes Still lifted a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-0.

The Bearcats added two more in the second. Hansen singled and later scored when Pip Smalley delivered an RBI infield single. An error on the play also allowed Caden Crews to score, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Belmont Abbey responded in the third with a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 4-3 and tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double.

Backman answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo home run down the left-field line. Later in the inning, Mason Salisbury lined a two-run single to right to extend the advantage to 7-4.

The Crusaders capitalized on control issues in the sixth. Five walks and a hit batter helped Belmont Abbey score four runs, highlighted by a two-run single and two RBI walks, giving the visitors their first lead at 8-7.

Lander regrouped in the seventh.

After Salisbury was hit by a pitch to open the inning, the Bearcats batted around during a seven-run outburst. Oliver Zohn tied the game with an RBI single, and Backman followed with a two-run double to put Lander ahead 10-8. McClellan added a two-run single, Smalley doubled home another run, and Connor Crenshaw capped the inning with an RBI single as Lander seized a 14-8 lead.

Teddy Garner entered in the seventh and stranded two runners to keep Belmont Abbey off the board. He earned the win after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Lander added two insurance runs in the eighth when McClellan lined a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring Crews and Hansen to make it 16-8.

Dawson Siffri and Evan Demurias combined to close out the ninth, with Demurias inducing a game-ending double play.

The Bearcats open Peach Belt Conference play this weekend when they host Middle Georgia. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.
