Lander Wins Polar Opposite Games to Sweep Doubleheader with Mount Olive

GREENWOOD — Lander used a dominant pitching performance in the opener and an explosive offensive showing in the nightcap to sweep a nonconference doubleheader against Mount Olive on Homecoming Saturday at Dolny Stadium.

The Bearcats earned a 2-1 win behind a complete-game effort from Jake Larson in game one before outlasting the Trojans 17-13 in the second game to secure the series victory. The sweep marked Lander's first-ever series win over Mount Olive and the first time the Bearcats have won two consecutive games against the Trojans since 2016.

Lander improved to 5-1 on the season.

Ryan Hansen and Zach Cowart drove in the two runs in the opener, with Hansen accounting for Lander's first home run of the season. Oliver Zohn paced the offense in game two with five RBIs on four hits, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, while Cowart added three RBIs.

Game 1: Lander 2, Mount Olive 1 (7 innings)

Larson tossed a seven-inning complete game, limiting a Mount Olive offense that had recorded 12 hits and nine runs the previous night to four hits and one run. The lone run came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Cowart gave Lander the lead in the third with an RBI single that scored Hansen. Hansen added an insurance run in the fifth with his first career home run, doubling the Bearcats' advantage.

Mount Olive brought the tying run into scoring position in the seventh, but Larson recorded a strikeout to close out the victory.

Game 2: Lander 17, Mount Olive 13

Mount Olive built an early lead with a run in the first inning and five more in the third to go up 6-0. Cowart got Lander on the board in the fourth with a two-run home run, but the Trojans answered with a run in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.

Lander responded in the bottom of the fifth. A passed ball allowed Caden Crews to score before Will McClellan crossed the plate on a fielder's choice. Zohn followed with a two-run double to pull the Bearcats within one run.

The Trojans regained momentum in the sixth, scoring five runs to push the lead to 11-6. Lander answered with a six-run rally to tie the game.

Cowart drove in a run with a single before Brody Winter worked a bases-loaded walk. Zohn added another RBI single, and an error allowed an additional run to score. Crews was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to knot the game at 11.

Crews was hit by a pitch three times in the contest, part of eight hit batters for Lander in game two. Through six games, Bearcat hitters have been hit 27 times, an average of 4.5 per game.

Hansen gave Lander its first lead with a sacrifice fly to make it 12-11 after six innings. After a scoreless seventh from Thomas Goldberg, the Bearcats extended the lead in the eighth with a wild pitch and two bases-loaded walks to push the margin to 15-11.

Mount Olive scored once in the eighth, but Zohn answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. The Trojans added a run in the ninth, but Goldberg limited the damage to earn his second win of the season.

Lander continues its homestand Tuesday against Belmont Abbey. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.

The Bearcats open Peach Belt Conference play next weekend against conference newcomer Middle Georgia, with games scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. Lander will seek its third consecutive PBC regular-season title.
