Bearcats Split Midweek Doubleheader at North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Lander softball earned a split of a midweek road doubleheader Wednesday at North Greenville, opening the day with a 3-1 win before dropping the nightcap, 4-2, at Jan McDonald Field.

With the split, Lander moved to 3-1 on the season while North Greenville fell to 3-3.

Game One: Lander 3, North Greenville 1

The Bearcats leaned on pitching and situational hitting to take the opener behind a strong start from Paige Sherman. Sherman improved to 2-0 after allowing one run on nine hits over six innings, while Mattye Geddings worked a clean seventh to collect her second save of the season.

Lander struck first in the third inning when Isabella Santos lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bella Angeli. The lead doubled in the sixth as Brie Cazares singled up the middle to drive in Santos. An insurance run followed in the seventh on Reagan Hill's RBI double down the left-field line, plating Angeli.

The Bearcats drew six walks and did not strike out in the opener, consistently putting the ball in play and applying pressure throughout.

Angeli finished with two runs scored and a hit, while Emily Allen recorded a pair of hits, including a double. Hill, Cazares, and Santos each drove in a run for Lander.

Game Two: North Greenville 4, Lander 2

North Greenville evened the doubleheader with a four-run effort in the second game, using an early two-run home run in the first inning to take an early lead.

Lander answered in the third when Angeli delivered a ground-rule double to score Kara VonAchen. The Bearcats added another run in the fifth on Angeli's sacrifice fly, again bringing home VonAchen, but could not close the gap.

VonAchen led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance and scored both Lander runs. Angeli drove in both RBIs, while Allen, Santos, and Hill each added hits.

In the circle, Brie Cazares took the loss after four innings, and Payton Schurlknight provided two innings of relief.

Lander returns home Friday, Feb. 13, to host the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic at Doug Spears Field, opening play against Emory & Henry at 4 p.m. and Young Harris at 6 p.m. Full tournament details, including schedule and teams, are available on the tournament page.
