Lander Falls to No. 14 Columbus State

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's soccer team could not find its offensive rhythm as No. 14 Columbus State used a pair of first-half goals to pull away for a 2-0 win Wednesday evening at Van Taylor Stadium.

The Bearcats were held to one shot in the first 45 minutes, with their lone attempt coming after the Cougars had already established a two-goal lead.

The visitors broke the ice less than three minutes in as several quick passes resulted in a cross that found the foot of Columbus State's Shania Wegesend, who put the ball just out of the reach of a leaping Leah Hayes Coen to make it 1-0. The goal came at the 2:32 mark and was assisted by Kendal Coreil and Elle Henschel.

Then, in the 29th minute, Raegen Varvarigos got her head on a corner kick and put it into the goal to double the lead heading into halftime. The goal was scored at 28:40 and assisted by Sophia Leal.

Lander started to build some offense to open the second half, and Angele Hills, fresh off being named the PBC Player of the Week following her hat trick against USCA, nearly pulled the Bearcats back into the game, but her shot hit the crossbar and went out of play.

Kylie Wilson had the last chance of the match for the Bearcats, but her shot was saved as the Cougars preserved the shutout. Wilson's shot was one of just three Lander attempts in the second half, while Columbus State recorded four.

Lander will hit the road for its next two matches, traveling to USC Beaufort on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. The Bearcats will then travel to Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a 7 p.m. kickoff before returning home Saturday, Oct. 17, to face Middle Georgia. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
