GREENWOOD – On a crisp fall Senior Day Saturday at
Van Taylor Stadium, the Lander women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against visiting Middle Georgia.
Lander was in the driver's seat the whole match and put a blitzkrieg on the Knights with 29 shots and 14 on target. The Bearcats also had 12 corner kick opportunities.
Langley Stewart sent a pass into the box in the 14th minute that was kicked aside by the Knights' keeper – and right into
Peyton Bibbee's lap for an easy tap-in to put Lander on top. It was Bibbee's first goal of the season. Neither side added a goal the remainder of the half as Lander went into the halftime break up 1-0.
Despite taking five shots this afternoon and only getting two on target, the Knights caught a fortunate break in the 48th minute when Tegan Mullins put a shot on from 30 yards out that took an awkward bounce off
Leah Hayes Coen and rolled into the net.
Lander had several close chances over the last 40 minutes but just couldn't find the go-ahead goal.
Paige Bailey struck the crossbar with 1:30 left in the match in what turned out to be Lander's final shot.
Seven Bearcats were honored in a pregame ceremony:
Reagan Hardy, Hayes Coen,
Rylee King,
Maddie Leber,
Ansley Morrell,
Ruby Stayduhar and
Evelyn Wright.
LU has Sunday off before traveling to Bluffton to battle USC Beaufort in a 3 p.m. game Monday that was rescheduled due to rain last weekend.
