AIKEN, S.C. – Down the road at Pacer Pit on Wednesday night, the Lander men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to USCA in Peach Belt Conference action.
It was an even battle between the teams as Lander took 14 shots to USCA's 17 and put five on net while the Pacers had seven.
USCA put both of its goals in during the first half in the 16th and 36th minutes.
Orran Mushet and
Storm van de Werken almost teamed up on a picture-perfect goal in the 26th minute after
Savvas Chionakis sent a pass up the wing to Mushet. Both Mushet and van de Werken got in deep but Mushet's cross went a skosh wide of the net and van de Werken couldn't get a clean foot on it.
van de Werken was denied in the 52nd minute but finally found redemption 14 minutes later thanks to a nice heel pass in the box from
Tal Torgeman that set him up beautifully.
Trailing 2-1, Lander was unable to put a shot on target over the final 24 minutes – van de Werken sent one wide right in the 81st minute and Torgeman another shot high of the net in the 86th – and was handed the final result.
The Bearcats will host regular-season champion No. 16 Flagler this Saturday, Oct. 24 on Senior Day. A pre-match ceremony will take place about 20 minutes prior to the scheduled 3 p.m. kick-off.
