Lander Defeats Converse 3-1 in SAC Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Defender Nienke Meima scored twice and senior Victoria Hulst added another as Lander opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 3-1 win over Converse on Thursday evening at Weisiger Stadium.

The victory marked Lander's third straight win over the Valkyries after dropping the first four meetings in the series.

Lander controlled possession for most of the match, outshooting Converse 15-11 and putting 10 attempts on target. The Bearcats also earned 13 penalty corners to the Valkyries' seven.

Meima wasted little time getting the Bearcats on the board, poking in a cross from Leira Van Tilburg just 2:32 into the match. Converse equalized seven minutes later when Amparo Figueroa finished off a rebound despite a diving save from goalkeeper Isabel Elenga.

Hulst put Lander back in front in the 26th minute, following up her own rebound to notch her first goal of the season. Meima doubled the lead midway through the third quarter, intercepting a pass in the shooting circle and slotting home her second goal of the night.

The Bearcats had to withstand a late surge from Converse, who generated seven of their 11 shots in the fourth quarter. Elenga made two of her three saves in the final period to preserve the win.

The Bearcats (2-0, 1-0 SAC) return home Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Slippery Rock. Pushback is scheduled for noon at Frank Hill Stadium.
