GREENWOOD - Grant Sherrod became just the fourth Lander baseball player to earn All-America recognition from multiple organizations, as he was named a D2Baseball.com All-American on Monday afternoon. Sherrod was selected to the second team, adding to his American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Second-Team All-America honor from earlier this summer.
He joins Erik Lunde, Connor Lewis and Patrick Grady as Bearcats to collect at least two All-America honors in the same season. That trio, part of Lander's 2014 Peach Belt Conference and NCAA Southeast Region championship team, earned spots on both the ABCA and Daktronics All-America teams.
The Peach Belt Conference batting champion, Sherrod capped his final collegiate season with a .408 batting average. He led Lander in nearly every offensive category, finishing with 97 hits, 19 doubles, 11 home runs and 76 RBIs. He posted a .626 slugging percentage and a .496 on-base percentage—both among the top marks in the Southeast Region.
Nationally, Sherrod ranked second in NCAA Division II in total hits, ninth in hits per game (1.70), 23rd in RBIs per game (1.33), and 38th in batting average. The Sumner, Washington, native was also named the NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week on March 10.
