Lander Rallies in Singles to Defeat Limestone on the Road

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Lander women's tennis team bounced back after an early deficit, storming through singles play to defeat Limestone, 4–1, Wednesday afternoon at the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center.

After dropping the doubles point, the Bearcats (9–8) responded in dominant fashion with four decisive singles wins, clinching the non-conference road victory over the Saints (4–11).

Doubles Recap

Lander dropped two of three doubles matches to concede the opening point.

At No. 1 doubles, Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza fell 6–0 to Limestone's Greta Langiu and Galilea Amavizca. The No. 2 pairing of Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin battled but ultimately lost 6–4 to Maria Cecilia-Gomez and Monika Temkova.

Lander's lone doubles win came at the No. 3 spot, where Ella Sowman and Hannah Panchal blanked Limestone's Maria Fernandes and Emmy Humphries, 6–0.

Singles Recap

The Bearcats flipped the script in singles, showcasing their depth and composure with four straight-set victories.

At No. 6, Sowman delivered a flawless performance, dispatching Humphries 6–0, 6–0 to level the match. Panchal followed suit at No. 5 with a dominant 6–1, 6–0 win over Fernandes, giving Lander its first lead of the afternoon.

Jose Zarza pushed the margin to 3–1 after a 6–1, 7–5 win over Langiu at No. 3, and Altmaier sealed the win with a gritty 6–2, 3–6, 6–4 triumph over Amavizca at No. 2.

Two matches remained unfinished. Elsborg was battling Temkova at No. 1 before play was halted, and Martin was locked in a seesaw contest at No. 4 when the Bearcats clinched the victory.

Lander will carry this momentum back into Conference play, where the Bearcats aim to notch their first league win.
