Lander Grabs First PBC Win with 7-0 Sweep Over Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. - The Lander University women's tennis team secured its first Peach Belt Conference win in dominant fashion Friday afternoon, blanking Georgia Southwestern 7-0 at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.

The Bearcats (9-9, 1-4 PBC) snapped a three-match skid with a clean sweep of both singles and completed doubles, overpowering the Hurricanes (3-7, 0-4 PBC) on their home courts.

Doubles Recap

Lander set the tone early in doubles play. The tandem of Fe Batoon and Becca Latty made quick work on Court 3, dispatching Mabry Bowron and EmmaRae Smith 6-1 for the day's first win.

On Court 1, Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza followed suit, taking down Monique Gundrum and Melissa Duarte 6-2 to clinch the doubles point.

The No. 2 match featuring Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin against Ustina Schyslionak and Madeline Barnes was left unfinished, with the Bearcats leading 4-3.

Singles Recap

The Bearcats didn't let up in singles, sweeping all six courts to secure the 7-0 victory.

Micaela Pallete opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 performance at No. 6 over EmmaRae Smith. Evelyn Altmaier added to the momentum, cruising past Melissa Duarte 6-1, 6-0 on Court 2.

 Maria Jose Zarza followed closely with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Ustina Schyslionak.

Ella Sowman continued the surge for Lander, defeating Mabry Bowron 6-1, 6-0 at the fifth line. Mille Elsborg then closed out a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Monique Gundrum at the top spot.

In a tightly contested battle on Court 4, Bailee Martin outlasted Madeline Barnes in a match tiebreak, rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win to seal the sweep.

Lander will close out its non-conference slate on the road against Mars Hill on Friday, April 18, in Mars Hill, N.C., in a match rescheduled from February 18.
