Lander Falls to #5 North Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. – A seventh-inning wild pitch brought the Lander baseball team level with No. 5 North Greenville at 2-2, but the Trailblazers plated seven unanswered runs across the final two innings to pull away for a 9-2 win on Wednesday evening at Fluor Field at the West End.

Kurt Rogers (Westminster, S.C.) started on the mound for the Bearcats and threw three scoreless innings, striking out three.

Caden Crews (Jansen Beach, Fla.) gave Lander (27-12) a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI single that scored Garrett Chun (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Tyler Bowen (Dagsboro, Del.) relieved Rogers and kept North Greenville (34-8) off the scoreboard until the fifth, when a pair of well-placed hits brought home the tying run. The Trailblazers took the lead in the sixth, capitalizing on a throwing error to go ahead 2-1.

Lander threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs on singles by Adam Love (Roswell, Ga.) and Chun, followed by Mario Lopez Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) hit by pitch. Love came home to tie the game on a wild pitch. An intentional walk to pinch hitter Zach Cowart (Lexington, S.C.) reloaded the bases with one out, but the Bearcats couldn't push another run across, and North Greenville escaped the jam.

The Trailblazers responded immediately, scoring five runs in the top of the eighth, including a bases-clearing double, and tacked on two more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Lander returns home this weekend to host Georgia College & State University—the current Peach Belt Conference leader—for a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will serve as the team's "Red, White, and Code Blue" game, with tributes planned for military members and first responders throughout the night. Game two is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, and the series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
