Lander Splits Doubleheader with Georgia College & State University

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Lander baseball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Georgia College & State University on Saturday at Dolny Stadium. Will McClellan delivered a go-ahead RBI triple in the eighth inning of game one to lift the Bearcats to a 4-3 win, while a ninth-inning rally came up short in a 3-2 loss in game two.

Saturday also featured the team's "Red, White, and Code Blue" celebration, honoring military members and first responders, after Friday's originally scheduled event was postponed due to weather.

Lander (28-13, 16-4 PBC) remains one game back of Georgia College (26-16, 17-3 PBC) and North Georgia for the top spot in the PBC standings.

Game 1: Lander 4, Georgia College 3

The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Lander responded quickly. Zach Cowart singled to score Garrett Chun and cut the deficit to one, followed by a sacrifice fly from Taichi Nakao to tie the game at 2-2 after two innings.

In the sixth, a delayed double steal allowed Adam Love—who had reached on an error—to score and give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead.

After allowing the two early runs, Dominic Puccetti settled in and tossed six innings of two-run baseball, striking out eight while giving up just five hits.

The Bobcats tied the game in the top of the eighth on a double play, taking Puccetti out of contention for his potential eighth win.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Chun singled, setting the stage for McClellan to drive a triple into the right-center gap to give Lander a 4-3 lead.

Tyler Bowen, who entered in the eighth, retired the side in order in the ninth to secure the victory.

Game 2: Georgia College 3, Lander 2

Caden Crews opened the scoring for the Bearcats in the first inning with an RBI single to score Chun.

Luke Johnson, who also organized the day's military tributes, kept the Bobcats off the board through four innings, allowing just two hits. Georgia College finally broke through in the fifth, scoring twice to take the lead. Johnson limited the damage and finished with a strong outing.

Chun brought the game level in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.

In the top of the ninth, a sacrifice fly put the Bobcats back in front. Lander appeared poised for a walk-off rally in the bottom half as Nakao drew his 44th walk of the season and Evan Wickeri followed with a single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. But Georgia College retired the next three batters to close out the win and force a rubber match on Sunday.

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dolny Stadium. Standard admission pricing will apply.
