Lander Falls Short in Tight 4-3 Road Match at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The No. 24 Lander men's tennis team put forth a resilient performance Tuesday afternoon but ultimately fell 4-3 in a hard-fought road match against Limestone at the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center.

Doubles Recap

Limestone claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matchups. Lander's No. 2 pairing of Merlin Bellet and Ludvig Danielsson delivered a solid 6-4 win over Zamorano and Cortez, but the Saints secured the point with victories on courts one and three. 

At the top spot, Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash fell 6-3 to Villavicenci and Markovski, while Max Barriere and Markus Sorensen dropped a tightly contested 7-6(4) match at No. 3 to Rincon and Calou.

Singles Recap

Lander battled back in singles play, taking three matches to keep the overall result within striking distance. 

Mouad Naoui got the Bearcats on the board with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, followed by Ismail ElShafei's sharp 6-3, 6-2 performance on court four. Jayaprakash capped off the wins for Lander, cruising past Bourdon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

Despite the push, Limestone held firm at the top and middle of the lineup. Harry Pugh forced a third set in a gritty battle at No. 1 but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-7(0), 6-4 to Markovski. Markus Sorensen dropped his match 6-3, 6-3 on court two, while Max Barriere dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 spot, sealing the match in favor of the Saints.

Lander wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 19, with a Senior Day showdown against Peach Belt Conference foe No. 23 Columbus State (8-9, 1-1 PBC) at 2:30 p.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in Greenwood.
