No. 26 Lander Battles but Falls 5-2 to No. 19 Columbus State

GREENWOOD - The No. 26 Lander University men's tennis team turned in a competitive performance Saturday afternoon but ultimately came up short in a 5-2 loss to No. 19 Columbus State at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in Peach Belt Conference play.

The Bearcats (11-6, 2-3 PBC) picked up two singles victories in the matchup, showing a fight against a strong Cougars squad (11-9, 4-1 PBC).

Doubles Recap

Columbus State struck first by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

At No. 1 doubles, CSU's No. 3 ranked pair Andrea Sandrone and Elias Peter rolled to a 6-1 victory over Lander's Markus Sorensen and Harry Pugh. On court three, Camilo Cano and Samer Al Tori added another point for the Cougars with a 6-3 win over Ludvig Danielsson and Merlin Bellet.

The No. 2 doubles match between Lander's Brendan Jayaprakash and Max Barriere and CSU's Benedek Szombathelyi and Yike Liu was tied 5-5 before going unfinished.

Singles Recap

Lander responded in singles with wins on courts one and four. At No. 1 singles, Pugh earned a dominant 6-3,1-6, 6-1 victory over Cano, putting Lander on the board. Naoui followed with a gritty three-set win at No. 4, defeating Szombathelyi 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.

Columbus State closed out the match with four singles victories.

At No. 2, Bellet dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Al Tori, while Sorensen fell to Sandrone at No. 3 in a 7-6 (4), 6-3 match. Peter edged Ismail ElShafei 7-5, 7-5 on court five, and Liu outlasted Jayaprakash 7-6 (6), 6-3 at No. 6.

The Bearcats shift its focus to postseason play as Lander heads to Columbus, Ga., for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, set for April 25–27.
