Makayla Lowe Selected to Serve as Assistant Coach for USA Rugby Regional South U23 Women's Team

GREENWOOD - Lander University's Head Women's Rugby Coach, Makayla Lowe, has been selected as an assistant coach for the USA Rugby Regional South U23 Women's Team. This prestigious appointment reflects Lowe's dedication, leadership, and growing influence in the world of rugby.

Lowe will serve in this role while continuing to serve as the head coach of the Lander women's rugby program.

The USA Rugby Regional South U23 Women's Team, based at the USA Rugby Headquarters in Glendale, Colorado, comprises top talent from across the Southeast, including players from North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, and Kentucky. The program plays a pivotal role in developing elite athletes and serving as a key stepping stone to the national level.

Lowe joined Lander University in June 2024, bringing with her a wealth of playing and coaching experience and a strong commitment to growing the Bearcats' women's rugby program. Under her leadership, the team has continued to build a competitive presence in collegiate rugby.

In addition to her collegiate role, Lowe's new position with the U23 South team further highlights her commitment to advancing women's rugby and supporting player development at every level.

Lisa Jackson, head coach of the USA U23s South and assistant coach at Dartmouth College, shared her enthusiasm about adding Lowe to the coaching staff:

"I've been blessed to coach Makayla a few times. As a young, aggressive player in college and as she started transitioning to coaching, I knew I wanted that type of energy in the environment we are creating here. Bringing Makayla onto our staff infuses fresh ideas and energy into the team and inspires growth in both players and staff alike," Jackson said.

Sione Fukofuka, head coach of the USA Women's Eagles, also commended Lowe's appointment:

"Makayla is an exciting young coach who works hard and takes every opportunity to learn. Taking on the opportunity to lead the Lander program shows that she is invested in women's rugby and has the courage to make strong decisions. The U23 Rugby South role is another chance to see Makayla step up and contribute to the women's pathway," Fukofuka said.

Lowe expressed her excitement and personal connection to the team:

"I'm absolutely ecstatic to be a part of this incredible environment alongside such a talented group of individuals. A fun fact about this team is that I actually won a national championship with them, so this squad holds a very special place in my heart. It's truly an honor to return and contribute to the success of this team in a new role. I'm eager to bring my energy, passion and experience to the table, and I'm excited to collaborate with the coaches to continue pushing the beautiful sport of rugby to new heights. I'm looking forward to the journey ahead and am thrilled to be a part of the USA U23s South," Lowe said.

Lowe's dual roles at Lander University and with USA Rugby Regional South emphasize her growing impact on the sport and her dedication to fostering the next generation of women's rugby talent.
