Lander Baseball Sweeps USC Beaufort with Saturday Doubleheader Wins; Burke Picks up 200th Career Win

GREENWOOD, S.C. – For the second consecutive weekend, the Lander baseball team completed a Saturday doubleheader sweep to secure a Peach Belt Conference series sweep, this time defeating USC Beaufort. The Bearcats held off a late rally to win game one, 6-4, before taking game two in run-rule fashion, 11-1, in seven innings.

Lander (27-11, 15-3 PBC) now holds a half-game lead over North Georgia for second place in the conference standings. The Nighthawks dropped game two of their series against Georgia Southwestern, with the series finale set for Sunday.

The 11-1 victory in game two also marked head coach Jason Burke's 200th career win.

Game 1: Lander 6, USC Beaufort 4
Lander struck early with an RBI double from Grant Sherrod (Sumner, Wash.) and a sacrifice fly by Connor Droze (Roebuck, S.C.) to take a 2-0 lead after one inning. RBI singles from Evan Wickeri (Middleburg, Fla.) and Sherrod in the second stretched the lead to 5-0.

Sherrod added his third RBI of the game with a double in the seventh, giving Lander a commanding 6-0 lead.

On the mound, Dominic Puccetti (Monroe, Mich.), Tyler Bowen (Dagsboro, Del.), and Richie Cortese (Laurel, Mont.) combined to hold the Sand Sharks scoreless through seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine. Bowen earned his first win of the season after striking out four over two innings.

USC Beaufort made things interesting in the eighth with back-to-back two-run home runs to trim the lead to 6-4. Bennett Sloper (Simpsonville, S.C.) was called upon to close and delivered, striking out three over 1.1 innings while facing the minimum to earn his second save of the season.

Game 2: Lander 11, USC Beaufort 1 (7 inn.)
The Sand Sharks (5-30, 1-17 PBC) scored their first run of the series in the top of the first, but the lead didn't last long. Wickeri answered in the bottom half with a two-run home run to give Lander a 2-1 edge. Garrett Chun (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Mario Lopez Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) added RBI singles to make it 4-1 after one inning.

Lander pulled away with a two-run homer from Droze in the third and a three-run blast from Chun in the fifth to make it 9-1.

Luke Johnson (Anderson, S.C.) struck out six over five innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. Anson Merrick (Chapin, S.C) and Evan Demurias (Miami, Fla.) each pitched scoreless frames in relief.

In the seventh, Lander loaded the bases for Wickeri, who capped off his stellar weekend by delivering a walk-off double down the left field line to plate two more runs and invoke the 10-run mercy rule. Wickeri finished the series with nine RBIs.

Lander returns to action Wednesday with a neutral-site matchup against North Greenville at Fluor Field in Greenville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets are available at landerbearcats.com/fluorfield.
