Lander Battles No. 10 Columbus State in 5-2 Loss

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's tennis team pushed No. 10 Columbus State to the limit Saturday, earning the doubles point and a straight-set singles win before ultimately falling 5-2 in Peach Belt Conference action at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

The Bearcats (11-9, 1-5 PBC) got a strong start in doubles play, capturing wins on courts one and two to take the early advantage.

On the top court, Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza edged Columbus State's No. 5 ranked duo Nikoline Gullacksen and Mariana Ramirez, 7-5. 

Moments later, Lander clinched the doubles point when Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin earned a gritty 7-6 (5) victory over Isadora Oliveira and Laura Pesickova on court two. 

The Cougars (13-5, 5-1 PBC) picked up their lone doubles win at the No. 3 spot, where Annie Adams and Majra Djokic defeated Hannah Panchal and Ella Sowman, 6-2.

Singles Recap

Zarza picked up Lander's second point in singles action with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Pesickova at No. 3 singles. 

Altmaier pushed No. 31-ranked Ramirez to three sets on court two, rallying in the second set before narrowly falling in a 7-6 (2) third-set tiebreak.

Columbus State responded with straight-set wins on the remaining four courts to seal the match. 

Gullacksen defeated Elsborg at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while Oliveira, Lauretti, and Djokic each added singles wins for the Cougars.
