Lander Drops PBC Quarterfinal Match to No. 10 Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The sixth-seeded Lander Bearcats dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 10-ranked and third-seeded Columbus State in the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

Doubles Recap

Columbus State (14-5) started strong in doubles play, quickly securing the opening point. At the No. 2 spot, Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin fell 6-3 to the Cougar duo of Isadora Oliveira and Laura Pesickova. 

Moments later, Lander's top pair of Maria Jose Zarza and Mille Elsborg came up short, 6-4, against Nikoline Gullacksen and Mariana Ramirez. The No. 3 doubles match, featuring Ella Sowman and Hannah Panchal, was left unfinished, with the teams tied 4-4 in the first set.

Singles Recap

In singles action, Columbus State claimed three straight-set victories to clinch the match. 

Elsborg fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 to nationally ranked No. 12 Gullacksen, while Martin was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Sofia Lauretti at No. 4. Altmaier put up a fight at No. 2 but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-4 to No. 33 nationally ranked Ramirez.

The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, with the Cougars leading each match on courts 3, 5, and 6.
