Lander Sweeps Doubleheader, Series Against USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. — The Lander baseball team swept its third Peach Belt Conference series of the season, defeating the USC Aiken Pacers twice on Saturday — 12-4 in game one and 6-3 in game two — at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

Dominic Puccetti picked up his seventh win of the season on the mound in game one, while Kurt Rogers earned the win in relief in game two for his second victory of the year. Jake Larson and Tyler Bowen each recorded saves.

Game 1: Lander 12, USC Aiken 4
Garrett Chun gave Lander (24-10, 12-3 PBC) a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-RBI single. However, the Pacers (15-19, 6-9 PBC) responded quickly with four runs in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead after one inning of play.

Grant Sherrod brought Lander within one with an RBI single in the second, and Will McClellan tied the game at four in the third with a solo home run.

The Bearcats took control in the fifth inning, scoring five runs to build a 9-4 lead. McClellan opened the scoring with a fielder's choice RBI to give Lander the lead. Jackson Hoshour followed with an RBI single, and a passed ball brought home Cooper Backman. Taichi Nakao and Evan Wickeri capped off the rally with RBI singles.

A Chun sacrifice fly in the eighth and a Sherrod two-RBI double in the ninth added insurance runs for Lander.

After the four-run first inning, Puccetti settled in and allowed just three hits over the next four innings to complete five solid frames. Larson took over in the sixth, facing only one batter over the minimum to secure the save.

Game 2: Lander 6, USC Aiken 3
The Pacers took an early lead for the first time in the series, scoring a run in the second inning to go up 1-0.

Lander quickly responded. Wickeri tied the game in the third with a solo homer, and Mario Lopez Jr., returning to the lineup, delivered an RBI double in the fourth to put Lander ahead 2-1. Lopez and Backman then crossed the plate on a Pacer error, extending the lead to 4-1.

USC Aiken pulled within two on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bearcats answered back. Backman and Hoshour each drove in a run in the sixth, making it 6-2.

A Pacer solo home run in the sixth was the final offensive spark for USC Aiken. Rogers allowed just two batters over the minimum in two innings of relief, while Bowen dominated over the last three frames, striking out six to earn the save.

The Bearcats will return home for the first time since March 16, hosting the Francis Marion Patriots on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
