Lander Battles in Hard-Fought PBC Opener Against Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Lander women's tennis team (8-5, 0-1 PBC)  put up a strong fight in its Peach Belt Conference opener but ultimately fell 5-2 against Georgia College on Tuesday at the Centennial Center Tennis Courts. 

Doubles Recap

Georgia College (12-2, 3-0 PBC) claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza faced a tough challenge in the top spot, falling 6-1 to the Bobcats' duo of Chiara Santoro and Rachel Black. 

At No. 3, Ashtyn Cason and Hannah Panchal kept it competitive but ultimately dropped a 6-4 decision. Meanwhile, Bailee Martin and Evelyn Altmaier were locked in a back-and-forth battle at No. 2, tied at 5-5 before the match went unfinished.

Singles Recap

Lander responded in singles play with standout performances from Altmaier and Jose Zarza. Altmaier delivered a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jada Young at No. 2, while Zarza edged out Ashley Bentz in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, at No. 3. 

Elsborg battled at No. 1 but lost in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 6-10. In the No. 5 matchup, Cason was in a competitive match before she had to retire due to injury. 

Georgia College secured wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to clinch the match, giving the Bobcats a 5-2 victory over Lander.

The Bearcats will look to bounce back in their next PBC matchup against Flagler College (12-2, 0-0 PBC) at home on Friday, March 28. Doubles will begin at 9 a.m. at the Joe Cabris Tennis Center.
