Lander Claims Doubles Point, Pushes No. 4 Flagler in Gritty Battle

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats made an early statement by securing the doubles point against No. 4 Flagler, but the Saints responded in singles play to claim a 6-1 victory in a hard-fought Peach Belt Conference matchup on Friday morning at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

Doubles Recap

Lander came out strong in doubles, winning two of the three matchups to take an early 1-0 lead. Hannah Panchal and Ella Sowman delivered the first win for the Bearcats, edging out a 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

With the doubles point hanging in the balance, Bailee Martin and Evelyn Altmaier showed composure under pressure, fighting through a tiebreak to secure a thrilling 7-6(4) win at No. 2.

Flagler's seventh-ranked duo of Dana Heimen and Anastasia Nikolova picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1, but Lander's efforts in the second and third slots sealed the early advantage.

Singles Recap

Flagler quickly swung the momentum in singles play, claiming wins in straight sets at No. 5, No. 1, and No. 6 to take a 3-1 lead. The clinching point came at No. 3 singles, where Adela Latalova outlasted Maria Jose Zarza in a tightly contested match, 6-4, 7-5.

Martin jumped ahead early at No. 4, winning the first set 6-3, but Flagler's Laura Jipescu responded emphatically, taking the second set 6-0 before closing out a back-and-forth third set, 7-5.

At No. 2 singles, Altmaier fought hard against No. 34-ranked Nikolova, pushing both sets to the wire in a 7-5, 7-5 defeat.

Though the final score favored Flagler, Lander's competitive performance proved they can challenge the nation's best. The Bearcats will look to build on this effort as they continue Peach Belt Conference play.
