Lander Claims 6-1 Victory over Belmont Abbey

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's tennis team showcased its resilience on Tuesday afternoon, securing a 6-1 victory over Belmont Abbey at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center. After sweeping the doubles point, the Bearcats clinched the match by winning five of six singles contests, improving to 8-4 on the season.

Doubles Recap

Lander wasted no time taking control in doubles play. Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza dominated at No. 1, defeating Mackenzie McCarthy and Hanley Riner 6-2. 

On Court 3, Hannah Panchal and Ashtyn Cason handled business with a 6-3 win over Alexis Burkhalter and Paola Socarras. The most competitive match came at No. 2, where Bailee Martin and Evelyn Altmaier outlasted Leilany Sanchez and Elizabeth Vollmin 7-5 to complete the sweep.

Singles Recap 

The singles action saw Belmont Abbey fight back, but Lander proved too strong. Altmaier made quick work of Kaitlin Nguyen at No. 2, securing a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win.

Jose Zarza bounced back after a second-set slip at No. 3 to take down Riner 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Cason delivered in a hard-fought contest at No. 5, edging Burkhalter 6-4, 7-6 (9). 

Both Martin and Panchal rallied from early deficits, with Martin earning a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 and Panchal grinding out a 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 6. 

The Crusaders' lone point came at No. 1, where Frankee Hendricks battled past Elsborg in a marathon 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (8) thriller.

With the win, the Bearcats gain momentum heading into their next contest, a conference match-up with Georgia College & State University.

The Bearcats will open conference play against the Georgia College Bobcats (11-2, 2-0 PBC) on Tuesday, March 25 in Milledgeville, Ga. Doubles action will start at 3:00 p.m. at the Centennial Center Tennis Courts.
