Bearcats Edge Out Crusaders in Thrilling 4-3 Victory

BELMONT, N.C. - Lander University secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Belmont Abbey on Monday afternoon in a tense battle at the Reidy Tennis Center. The Bearcats (9-2) set the tone with a dominant performance in doubles play before clinching the match in singles, where Brendan Jayaprakash delivered the deciding point in a three-set thriller.

Doubles Recap

Lander swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. At the No. 3 spot, Ludvig Danielsson and Markus Sorensen were first off the court with a 6-3 win over Noelle Andrey Ampong and Tim Stemler. 

Brendan Jayaprakash and Harry Pugh followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 over Marcus Bergelin and Nicholas Cary, securing the doubles point for Lander. The top pairing of Max Barriere and Merlin Bellet completed the sweep, edging out Charlie Fremaux and Isaac Buerkle 7-5.

Singles Recap

In singles play, Pugh carried his momentum into the No. 1 match, cruising past Fremaux 6-2, 6-2 to push Lander ahead 2-0. Ismail ElShafei followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bergelin at No. 5, putting the Bearcats on the brink of victory. 

However, Belmont Abbey stormed back with three wins of its own. Ricard Novell outlasted Bellet 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 2, while Peru Bayo rallied to defeat Julian Peter 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Cary then kept the Crusaders alive with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mouad Naoui at No. 4, tying the match at 3-3.

With the outcome resting on Court 6, Jayaprakash battled back after dropping the first set to defeat Buerkle 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, sealing the victory for Lander. The win marks the Bearcats' ninth of the season as they continue to build momentum heading into conference action. 

UP NEXT 
Lander will open conference play on the road against Augusta University (9-4, 0-1 PBC) on Thursday, March 20. Doubles will start at 2:30 p.m. at the Newman Tennis Center.
