Lander Drops Home Match to North Greenville

GREENWOOD - The Lander University women's tennis team fell 4-1 to North Greenville on Tuesday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center. Despite Hannah Panchal doing quick work at No. 6 singles, earning the Bearcats' lone point, Lander could not overcome the Trailblazers. 

Doubles Recap

North Greenville took an early advantage in doubles by clinching the point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Lauren Chisholm and Daphney Koutsofta defeated Lander's Ashtyn Cason and Panchal 6-3 at No. 2, while Marina Cairus and Ashlen Chapman earned a 6-3 win over Ella Sowman and Becca Latty at No. 3. 

The No. 1 doubles match featuring Lander's Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin against Abigail Watson and Mikayla McKenzie was left unfinished at 5-4 in favor of North Greenville.

Singles Recap

In singles, Lander picked up its lone point at the No. 6 spot, where Panchal delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Riley Gunter. 

However, the Trailblazers responded with straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 to secure the team win. Cairus topped Altmaier 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, while Watson defeated Martin 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Koutsofta sealed the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sowman at No. 4.

The No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches were left unfinished. Maria Jose Zarza battled Chisholm to a 6-2, 2-6, 2-2 score, while Cason trailed McKenzie 6-2, 5-4 at No. 5 before the match was stopped.

With the loss, Lander falls to 6-4 on the season, while North Greenville improves to 3-6.

The Bearcats will look to bounce back in their next match against Converse University (4-5) on Saturday, March 15, at home. Doubles action will start at 2:00 p.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
