Softball Splits with Catawba in Midweek Matchup

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Lander softball team earned a split in its midweek doubleheader against Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Bearcats fell in the opener but bounced back in game two to secure the series split.

Game One: Catawba 18, Lander 1 (5 innings)

Lander (12-11) struggled against a hot-hitting Catawba (11-12) squad in game one, falling 18-1 in five innings. Despite the loss, the Bearcats found a bright spot in the fifth inning when Reagan Hill crushed a solo home run to right-center, preventing the shutout.

Gracie Derrick, Linda Moore, and Bella Angeli added a hit, while Kamryn Akins (6-3) took the loss in the circle.

Game Two: Lander 12, Catawba 4 (6 innings)

Lander (13-11) responded in game two with an offensive explosion, securing a 12-4 run-rule victory over Catawba (11-13) in six innings. The Bearcats racked up 14 hits and used multi-run innings to take control of the game early.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Holly Griffin and Sajarie Jones helped spark a four-run second inning with RBI singles. Jones later stole second, allowing Kaitlyn DeFranco to steal home in a heads-up baserunning play. Emily Allen capped the rally with an RBI single to right field.

Lander kept rolling in the third when Griffin delivered another clutch two-run single, extending the lead to 6-1. Catawba clawed back with two unearned runs in the bottom half, but the Bearcats responded in the fourth with a pair of two-run homers—one from Allen and Bella Angeli—to stretch the lead to 10-3.

Catawba's Maddy Altiers homered in the fifth, but Lander added two more insurance runs in the sixth. Linda Moore ripped an RBI single, and Gracie Derrick reached on an error, allowing Angeli to score and push the lead to 12-4.

Freshman pitcher Paige Sherman (1-0) earned her first win of the season, allowing just two earned runs over five strong innings. Mattye Geddings closed the door with a scoreless sixth to seal the victory.
