Lander Blanks Francis Marion in Home Victory

GREENWOOD - The Lander University women's tennis team secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Francis Marion University on Saturday morning at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center, improving to 6-3 on the season. 

The Bearcats clinched the match with strong performances in doubles and singles, shutting out the Patriots (2-3) in the final score.

Doubles Recap

The doubles competition was tightly contested, but Lander emerged with the crucial point. The No. 1 duo of Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza cruised to a 6-1 victory over Lara Lanno and Valery Gomez, improving to 6-3 overall at No. 1 doubles.

Francis Marion answered back at No. 2 doubles, as Sophia Hansen and F. Hernandez Huerta claimed a 6-4 win over Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin

The deciding match at No. 3 doubles saw Lander's freshman duo Ashtyn Cason and Ella Sowman outlast Kim Venghaus and Maia Warlies in a tense 7-6 (7-5 TB) battle, securing the early 1-0 lead for the Bearcats.

Singles Recap

In singles play, Lander continued its momentum, winning three completed matches to clinch the overall victory. At the No. 2 spot, Altmaier dominated Lanno with a swift 6-2, 6-1 performance. 

Jose Zarza followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hansen at No. 3 singles, extending Lander's lead further. 

Cason sealed the win for the Bearcats at No. 6 singles, defeating Lian Timmermans 6-3, 6-4. With the match already decided, the remaining singles contests were left unfinished.

UP NEXT 
The Bearcats will look to claim another win this season in an upcoming home match against North Greenville (2-4) on Wednesday, March 12. Doubles action will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
