Lander Struggles on the Road, Falls to Clayton State 70-51

MORROW, Ga. - The Lander Bearcats (10-8, 5-6 PBC) couldn't overcome a slow start and struggled offensively in a 70-51 road loss to Clayton State (9-13, 6-6 PBC) on Saturday afternoon.

Lander found themselves in an early hole as Clayton State came out firing. The Lakers shot an impressive 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from the field and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from three-point range, building a 25-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Bearcats struggled to find their touch, going just 5-for-22 (22.7 percent) from the field and 0-for-6 from deep.

Lander responded with a better second quarter, outscoring the Lakers 16-15 behind improved shooting from inside the arc. Quadaija Langley and Abby Carter helped trim the deficit, while the team connected on 35.3% (6-for-17) of their shots and 50 percent from three.

However, Clayton State continued to dominate the glass, securing key second-chance opportunities to maintain their lead at 40-26 heading into halftime.

Lander looked to close the gap after the break, but Clayton State's defense held firm. The Bearcats managed 14 points in the third but struggled from deep again, going 0-for-6 from three-point range. Clayton State capitalized on Lander's seven turnovers, scoring in transition and extending their lead to 58-40 going into the final period.

Any hopes of a Bearcat comeback faded in the fourth as Lander's shooting struggles continued. The team shot 4-for-18 from the field and 0-for-4 from three, finishing the game at just 27.4 percent overall and 10 percent from beyond the arc. Clayton State slowed the pace and closed the game comfortably, securing the 70-51 win.
