Women's Tennis Grabs First Win of the Season Defeating Barton 5-2

Wilson, N.C. - The Lander University women's tennis team grabbed its first win of the season, defeating Barton College 5-2 on the Bulldogs home courts. 

The Bearcats secured the doubles point with victories from the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams. In singles, wins at the No. 1 through No. 4 spots sealed the victory for the Bearcats.

Doubles Recap 

A dominant performance by the No. 3 doubles team of Ashtyn Cason and Hannah Panchal set the tone early, cruising to a 6-2 victory over the Bulldogs. 

Meanwhile, the No. 1 team of Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza faced a tough challenge but fought through the pressure, clinching the doubles point for the Bearcats with a hard-fought 6-4 win. 

While Barton College managed to take the No. 2 doubles match, Lander's momentum was already rolling into the singles competition.

Singles Recap 

Mille Elsborg showcased resilience at No. 1, battling through a tough three-set match to win 6-7, 7-5, 10-7. 

Evelyn Altmaier was in complete control at No. 2, breezing past her opponent with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

At No. 3, Maria Jose Zarza delivered another solid performance, securing a 6-2, 7-6 win. 

Ella Sowman added to the tally with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 4. Though Barton picked up victories at No. 5 and No. 6, Lander had already sealed the deal.

The Bearcats have a quick turnaround as they look to capture another win against Mount Olive on Saturday, Feb. 8. Doubles will begin at 10 a.m. in Mount Olive, N.C.
