GREENWOOD – The Lander men's lacrosse team battled hard but fell to No. 3 Limestone on Tuesday night at Van Taylor Stadium by a 14-9 final score.
With the result, Lander is now 2-2 and the Saints moved to 5-0.
Carter Wilcox scored four times to lead the Bearcats, followed by
Zane Dalpe's three goals.
Chase Hanson and
Michael Mattaliano tacked on the other scores for Lander.
The Bearcats raced out to a 3-0 lead over the first half of the opening quarter with goals from Dalpe (2:09), Wilcox (3:25) and Hanson (7:41).
The Saints scored four times over the last four minutes of the quarter to take a 4-3 advantage.
Dalpe struck early again in the second quarter with his second of the night to tie it at 4. Two Saints' goals made it 6-4 but Mattaliano trimmed the deficit back down to one with 6:59 left in the half; Limestone carried a 9-5 lead into halftime.
After the Saints pushed their lead to 12-5 following three quarters, Wilcox found the back of the net for the second time with 13:31 to play in the game.
Trailing by eight, Lander scored the game's final three goals over the last 6:50 – Wilcox had two in a row before Dalpe's third.
The Bearcats are back in action this Saturday (Feb. 22) in a 1 p.m. faceoff at Young Harris.
