Bearcats Battle, Fall Just Short in Season Opener Against Coker

Hartsville, S.C. - The Lander University women's tennis team fought hard in its season opener but fell short in a tight 4-3 loss to Coker University on Saturday afternoon at the Coker Tennis Courts.

Doubles Recap

The Bearcats (0-1) came out strong in doubles play, sweeping all three matches to secure the first point of the day. The top duo of Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza edged out a 7-6 victory, while Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin dominated their matchup with a 6-1 win. Ashtyn Cason and Hannah Panchal sealed the sweep with a convincing 6-2 triumph.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, Lander looked to carry its momentum, but Coker (1-0) responded with a strong singles performance. Despite a determined effort, the Bearcats dropped four of six singles matches, allowing the Cobras to secure the comeback victory.

Singles Recap

Maria Jose Zarza delivered a commanding win at No. 3 singles, defeating Emerson Banning 6-1, 7-5. Bailee Martin also came through with a clutch performance at No. 6 singles, outlasting Olivia Drake in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-0). However, Coker clinched the match with victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 singles, including a three-set battle at No. 4 where Ella Sowman fought hard but fell 6-1 in the final set.
