Bearcats Split Opening Day Doubleheader Against Wingate

GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team (1-1) kicked off the 2025 season with a strong start, earning a 4-2 victory in Game 1 before falling 10-5 in Game 2 against regional rival Wingate University (1-1) at Doug Spears Field on Saturday. This matchup marked a rematch from last season's NCAA Tournament, where Wingate, the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region, hosted the Bearcats, the No. 5 seed in postseason play.

Game 1: Lander 4, Wingate 2

The Bearcats set the tone early in the first game, fueled by a stellar performance from junior pitcher Kamryn Akins (1-0). Aikens pitched a complete game, giving up just two runs on six hits while striking out seven.

Emily Allen picked things up right where she left off, providing the offensive firepower and driving in all four of Lander's runs. She got things started in the first inning with a two-run double to right center, scoring Linda Moore and Kaitlyn DeFranco. Allen struck again in the third inning, launching a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Bulldogs attempted a late rally, scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Akins shut the door in the seventh, securing the Bearcats first win of the season.

Game 2: Wingate 10, Lander 5

In the second game, the Bearcats battled back multiple times but ultimately fell short after a big fifth inning from Wingate.

After trailing 2-0, Lander responded in the third inning as Bella Angeli doubled to drive in Gracie Derrick, followed by an RBI single from Allen to even the game at 2-2.

DeFranco added another run in the fourth to make it 3-3, but Wingate broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning, capped by a three-run homer from Hali Scott.

Despite Lander adding two more runs in the seventh, the deficit was too large to overcome. Jacy Ayers (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs in one inning of work.
