#7 Lander Falls to #2 Newberry in SAC Title Game

11NEWBERRY, S.C. – The third-seeded and seventh-ranked Lander Field Hockey team saw its program-record eight-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats fell 3-0 to top-seeded and second-ranked Newberry in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Game at Setzler Field.

The loss was Lander's (15-4) first since Oct. 11 and snapped a streak of six consecutive shutouts. It also marked the first time this season the Bearcats were held scoreless.

Lander opened strong, pressing the Wolves throughout the first quarter, but couldn't break through for an early lead. Newberry capitalized in the ninth minute as Wibien Dahmen flicked home a loose ball to open the scoring. The Wolves doubled their advantage off a penalty corner just four minutes later and added a third midway through the second quarter while the Bearcats were down a player due to a yellow card.

All-SAC First Team goalkeeper Isabel Elenga kept the Bearcats within striking distance, making seven saves in 58 minutes of work, including four in the third quarter. Mirte Van Roosebeke added a pair of defensive saves on the backline.

The Bearcats generated their best chances late, firing five shots in the fourth quarter, but a strong performance from Newberry keeper Ayanda Mangenah—who finished with five saves—secured the shutout.

Lander now turns its attention to the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. The Bearcats were ranked seventh in the Atlantic Region in the most recent NCAA rankings, with the top five teams earning tournament bids. If selected, Lander would become the first South Atlantic Conference team in history to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
