Lander Pushes No. 1 Flagler to the Brink in Five-Set PBC Championship Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - In a Peach Belt Conference championship that lived up to every ounce of its billing, No. 3 seed Lander put together one of its grittiest efforts of the season, taking top-seeded Flagler to the final swing before falling 3-2 on Sunday afternoon inside a packed Flagler Gym.

With both fanbases on their feet from the opening serve to the last rally, the match unfolded as a back-and-forth battle worthy of championship stakes. Lander (20-10, 10-5 PBC) opened the afternoon with a statement, hitting .346 in a dominant first set while holding Flagler to a .083 clip.

Flagler (21-12, 12-3 PBC) responded in sets two and three behind a surge from tournament MVP contender Marley Middlebrooks, who finished with 25 kills. But Lander was far from done. The Bearcats stormed back in set four, swinging .353 as they forced a decisive fifth set and silenced a rowdy home crowd that had been on its feet for nearly every point.

The finale was everything a championship set should be—long rallies, defensive grit, and both teams trading punches. Lander clawed back late and even held momentum behind a balanced block and timely kills, but Flagler edged out the final points for a 17-15 win to clinch the title.

Katie Miller once again led the Bearcat attack with 23 kills and 13 digs, battling through heavy swings and constant pressure from Flagler's block. Junior setter Enisilina Savelio put together one of the most complete stat lines of the tournament with 32 assists, 18 digs, eight kills, and two aces while hitting .421 and committing zero attack errors.

Karson Browning was a force at the net with 11 kills on .435 hitting to go with four blocks. Lander's front line was relentless, finishing with 11 total team blocks—three players recording four apiece (Browning, Alyssa Tegeler, and Amelia May).

The Bearcats posted 80 digs compared to Flagler's 100, pushing the Saints into long rallies and forcing 27 attack errors on the Saints.

Despite trailing in kills and assists, Lander stayed locked in point-for-point, leaning on timely serving, disciplined blocking, and their trademark resilience to stretch the No. 1 seed to the absolute limit.

The Bearcats leave St. Augustine with their heads high after delivering one of the most memorable championship performances in program history.

Lander will now turn its attention to the 2025 NCAA Division II Volleyball Selection Show at 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 24. Viewers can watch on the homepage of NCAA.com.
