Bearcats Edge Sand Sharks in Overtime to Stay Undefeated in Peach Belt

GREENWOOD - The Lander University women's basketball team advanced to 3-0 in Peach Belt Conference play with a thrilling 66-64 overtime victory against USC Beaufort on Wednesday night at Horne Arena. With the victory, the Bearcats extended their winning streak to five games, improving their overall record to 8-2.

How it Happened

The first quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm. Lander and USC Beaufort shot 26.7 percent from the field, each hitting only four field goals. The quarter ended with the score tied at 9-9, setting the tone for a contest that would ultimately extend into overtime. 

The Bearcats' offense exploded in the second quarter, shooting 53 percent from the field. The Bearcats took advantage of turnovers and second-chance opportunities, turning multiple fast breaks into easy layups. Meanwhile, the defense stifled the Sand Sharks, limiting them to just five points in the quarter. Lander ended the half on a 10-2 run, taking a commanding 28-14 lead into the locker room. 

The Sand Sharks came out of the half hot, shooting a scorching 55 percent from the field. Sheridan Bostic exploded for 11 points in the period, including two three-pointers that energized the Sand Sharks bench. LU's offense sputtered, shooting just 23 percent and struggling with turnovers. By the end of the quarter, USCB had clawed back to within two, 42-40.

The intensity escalated in the fourth as both teams traded baskets. Shcira Fowles and Courtney Nesbitt came up big for the Bearcats, hitting timely jumpers and free throws. USC Beaufort's Bostic continued her hot shooting, helping the Sand Sharks tie the game at 59 with under a minute remaining. 

Overtime turned into a defensive battle, with both teams visibly fatigued. Lander managed to score seven points, while USC Beaufort tallied five. The game was ultimately decided by Abby Carter's two free throws with just 2 seconds remaining, and Lander's defense held firm during USC Beaufort's final possession. The Bearcats emerged with a thrilling 66-64 victory, maintaining their perfect record in conference play.

Game Highlights 
  • Courtney Nesbitt recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds on the night 
  • Shcira Fowles continued to be a force for the team, recording 15 points and eight rebounds, including game-sealing free throws in overtime
  • Quadaija Langley delivered another clutch performance with 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists
  • Aliyah Bello rounded out the Bearcats double-digit scoring with 11 points, adding seven rebounds and four steals to her stat sheet 
The Bearcats converted 22 points off turnovers as a team and scored 38 of its 66 points in the paint. 

UP NEXT 
The Bearcats will host Clayton State, which is 4-9 overall, on Saturday. Tip-off will start at 1:30 p.m. at Horne Arena.
