Clayton State Stages Dramatic Fourth-Quarter Comeback to Hand Lander First Conference Loss

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats women's basketball team (8-3, 3-1 Peach Belt) suffered a tough loss against the Clayton State Lakers (5-9, 2-2 Peach Belt) despite leading most of the game.

How it Happened

Both teams started with a balanced play in the first quarter. Lander shot 33.3 percent from the field, with standout performances by Quadaija Langley early. It was even at 15 heading into the second quarter.

Lander took control with a 26-point explosion in the second quarter, fueled by efficient shooting (56.3 percent) and excellent team defense, holding Clayton State to just 27.3 percent shooting. Langley led all scorers in the quarter with 10 points, hitting a pair of layups, a three-pointer, and converting free throws to extend the Bearcats lead to 41-25 heading into the half.

Clayton State came out of halftime revitalized, shooting a blistering 60 percent from the field. However, the Bearcats stayed composed and closed the quarter ahead by 17.

The Lakers unleashed a relentless full-court press in the second half, igniting a furious rally that saw them outscore Lander 32-10. The Bearcats struggled to break through the defensive pressure, leading to several critical turnovers that shifted momentum entirely in Clayton State's favor.

Overall, fast break points and points in the paint shifted in Clayton State's favor, as they outscored Lander 28-14 in fast break points and 46-32 in points in the paint.
