Miller’s Late Goal Gives Lander 2-1 Win over Converse

GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey team got back to winning ways on Tuesday evening as they used a 55th-minute goal by Dusty-Rose Miller (Crisfield, Md.) to answer a goal by the Converse Valkyries just seconds earlier to nab a 2-1 win under the lights at Frank Hill Stadium to hand Converse their first loss of the season.

This was Lander's second straight win over one of the blue-blood programs of the conference after dropping the first four meetings between the two.

With the win, Lander now sits at 2-2 but a perfect 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse dropped to 3-1 with the same mark in the league.

In goal, Avery Tworkoski (Bernville, Pa.) recorded her first win of 2024. The Keystone State product had a big save in the first quarter to keep Converse off the board.

The game was a defensive battle in the first half. Lander was able to get off five shots to Converse's one, but Johanna Balks answered her counterpart on the other side and made three big saves to keep the Bearcats scoreless. For most of the half, both teams' defenses did a good job of limiting chances by the other side.

However, Lander capitalized on their second corner of the half as the ball was inserted to Leira Van Tilburg (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) who passed to Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) and then proceeded to dart into the circle to get on the other side of Punt's cross and direct it into the cage to give Lander the 1-0 lead which the Blue and Gold held until the halftime break.

The Lander defense kept the pressure on after halftime, only allowing one shot by Converse in the third quarter but the Valkyries found the breakthrough with just under six minutes left in the fourth on a great solo effort by Amparo Figueroa, who had just subbed into the game, to tie the game at one-all.

But, the game had no time to relax as just after the restart, Punt found her way down the wing and lofted a cross that found the stick of Miller and put Lander ahead for good. The Bearcat defense was stifling the rest of the way, not allowing the Valkyries to get a shot off to attempt to tie the game.

The Bearcats hit the road for their next contest as they face the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Saturday, September 21st. That game is slated for a high-noon start in the Tar Heel State. The last three contests between the Bearcats and Crusaders have all been 1-0 results in favor of Lander, including two matchups in the SAC Tournament.
