Lander Picks Up First Ever NCAA Tournament Win over Anderson; Game With Wingate Suspended

WINGATE, N.C. - With their backs up against the wall, the fifth-seeded Lander Softball team bounced back on Friday afternoon by defeating the eight-seed Anderson Trojans, 4-0, in an elimination game in the NCAA Southeast Regional. The win was the Bearcats' first NCAA Tournament win in program history.

The Bearcats started their second elimination game of the day against the top-seeded Wingate Bulldogs but weather forced the suspension of the game in the fifth inning with Lander leading 3-0.

Lander now sits at 33-17 while Anderson finishes their season at 34-19.

As they did on Thursday, Lander struck with a two-spot in the first inning as Emily Allen launched a two-run shot to center field to give the Bearcats the early 2-0 lead.

Lander plated two more in the fourth inning off a two-RBI single from Linda Moore to make it 4-0.

That was all the Lander offense needed as Bailey Pattison shut down the Anderson offense the whole game as she pitched her 13th complete game of the season, only allowing three hits and striking out four.

The elimination game with Wingate is set to resume at 11:00 AM in the top of the fifth with the Bulldogs batting as the designated visiting team. The winner of that game advances to face the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in the regional final and will need to defeat the Bears twice to advance.
