Lander Splits Senior Day Doubleheader with #4 North Georgia

GREENWOOD - The Lander Softball team scored ten runs across the second, third, and fourth innings to take only their second win over the fourth-ranked North Georgia Nighthawks since 2006, 10-5, in game one of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. However, the Nighthawks responded with a 14-5 win in game two to tie the series at one game apiece.

Lander now sits at 32-12 overall and 15-8 in PBC play while the Nighthawks sit at 41-8 overall and 20-3 in PBC play.

Game 1: Lander 10, #4 North Georgia 5
North Georgia struck first with back-to-back homers in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Lander got on the scoreboard in the second inning as they took advantage of a North Georgia error to cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the second.

The Bearcats plated four in the third as Gracie Derrick drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at two and Omahen forced an error to score Logan Coward to give Lander a 3-2 lead before Naya Jones roped a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 5-2 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Five more runs came across in the fifth with RBI singles from Coward, Derrick, and Rylee Omahen while Abbie Behe drove home another on a groundout to give Lander a 10-2 win after four innings.

The Nighthawks got a run back in the fifth to keep the game going and added three more in hte sixth to cut the lead to 10-5 but Bailey Pattison relieved Kamryn Akins and closed the door in the sixth and seventh to secure the win and her fourth save. Akins picked up the win after pitching 5.1 innings striking out four.

Game Two: #4 North Georgia 14, Lander 5
North Georgia struck first with five in the first inning but Lander started to ship away as they plated one in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second off a bases-loaded walk from Naya Jones and a RBI single from Saje Jones.

However, North Georgia kept the Bearcats off the board the next three innings and expanded their lead to 10-3 after the top of the sixth. Kaitlyn DeFranco came home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to six but a four spot in the seventh by the Nighthawks put the game out of reach.

The two teams wrap the series tomorrow with a single game scheduled for noon. If the Bearcats win that game, they will earn the #2 seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament and will host a double-elimination bracket next weekend.
