GREENWOOD - The second-ranked Lander Wrestling team had a season-high six pins, with five of them coming in less than 90 seconds and all of them coming in the first period, as the Bearcats downed the 22nd-ranked Montevallo Falcons, 48-3, in a match that lasted just under 50 minutes.
Lander improved to 14-3 overall, a perfect 9-0 in Conference Carolinas action, and 5-0 in the Conference Carolinas Western Division, clinching at least a share of the division title and securing a spot in the inaugural Conference Carolinas Wrestling Tournament on February 17th.
Montevallo dropped to 6-7 overall, 4-4 in conference, and 3-2 in division.
James Joplin (Greensboro, N.C.) once again wasted no time lighting a spark in the crowd as he got a quick takedown that resulted in a pin in 45 seconds to give Lander a 6-0 lead.
Montevallo got on the board with their first and only win at 133 as
Elijah Lusk (Merritt Island, Fla.) could not secure a late takedown and fell to the top-ranked wrestler in the weight class, Gabe Hixenbaugh, by a 4-2 decision to cut the Lander lead in half.
At 141, Isham Peace (Okatie, S.C.) secured three first period takedown and a pair of four-point nearfalls off the third one for a 1:32 17-2 technical fall.
Zeth Brower (Medford, Ore.) then got his first pin of the season at 149 in 1:18 to make it 17-3, Bearcats.
At 157, Jack Tangen (Glenview, Ill.) built a 13-3 lead after two periods and held of a comeback by Carson Freeman to secure a 14-7 decision.
David Hunsberger (Duncan, S.C.) picked up his team-leading 24th win of the season with his fourth pin of the campaign in 50 seconds to make it 26-3.Â
Brandon Matthews (Venetia, PA) secured a pin of his own at 174 in 1:22 and secured the win for the Bearcats at 32-3.
At 184, Jack Bond (O'Fallon, Ill.) used two third period takedowns to secure a 16-8 major decision before Anthony Yacovetti (Bridgeport, Pa.) got his 15th pin of the year and Juan Edmond-Holmes (Goose Creek, S.C.) closed out the night with his sixth pin of the season.
Lander closes the regular season on Friday against the King Tornado. Senior Day festivities are scheduled for before the match and first whistle is scheduled for 7:00 PM inside Horne Arena.
