AUGUSTA, Ga. - After hits were hard to come by in game one of the Lander Softball team's series against the Augusta Jaguars, the Bearcats were able to put together 19 hits across two games to sweep the doubleheader, 9-3 and 7-5, to take series over the Jaguars on Saturday afternoon.
Lander improves to 13-3, 2-1 in PBC play while the Jaguars drop to 9-8, 1-2 in PBC play.
Game 1: Lander 9, Augusta 3
Lander wasted no time offensively in the first game as Naya Jones led off the game with a walk and after a flyout to left, was brought home on an Abbie Behe RBI double to make it 1-0, Bearcats.Â
After that Raquel Camugila hit the first of what wound up being back-to-back-to-back home runs with
Logan Coward and
Kenley Powell to give Lander a 5-0 lead and force a Jaguar pitching change.
Augusta got two runs right back in the bottom of the first but after a quiet second inning form both teams, Camugila struck again with an RBI single to score Behe before coming around and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-2, Lander.
Augusta scratched across another run in the bottom of the third but that was as close as they got as Bailey Pattison threw her fourth complete game of the season and notched her fifth win.
Lander provided a little bit of insurance in the seventh as Emily Allen scored two with an RBI double to make it 9-3.
Game 2: Lander 7, Augusta 5
It was Augusta who struck first in game two as they put up a two spot in the first inning off a pair of Lander errors.
Powell cut the Jaguar lead in half with an RBI infield single in the second to make it 2-1 after two.
Camugila added another RBI in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to tie the game before Coward drove home Behe with a double to give Lander a 3-2 lead.
Augusta took the lead back in the fourth with a bases clearing double to make it 5-3 in favor of the home side but Lander added four of their own with two outs in the top of the fifth. Camugila reached on an error to score Bella Angeli before Coward deposited her second home run of the day to give Lander a 6-5 lead and Gracyn Millsaps made it back-to-back with a pinch hit home run to make it 7-5.
Alyssa Grimes relieved Taylor Scott and kept Augusta quiet for the fifth and the sixth but the Jaguars got the leadoff batter on in the seventh and Maddie Gibbs turned to Pattison who got the first batter she faced to ground into a double play before a 6-3 putout ended the game.

Lander travels to Harrogate, Tennessee on Wednesday as they take on the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters for a non-conference doubleheader before traveling to Bluftton, S.C. to take on the USC Beaufort Sand Sharks on Saturday and Sunday.
