Bearcats Plate 17 Runs en route to 2-0 day at the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic

GREENWOOD - After opening the home slate on Tuesday with a pair of shutout wins while scoring 17 runs, the Lander Softball team came close to repeating that feat on Saturday as they once again scored 17 runs and allowed only one as the Bearcats took down Claflin, 9-1, and Erskine, 8-0, both games ending in five innings.

Lander improves to 5-1 on the young season while Claflin dropped to 0-4 and Erskine dropped to 1-5 after both dropped a game earlier to the Newberry Wolves.

Game 1: Lander 9, Claflin 1 (F/5)

After stranding the bases loaded in the first inning, Lander got two runners on with two outs in the second off a Saje Jones (Cape Coral, Fla.) single and a Gracie Derrick (Chapin, S.C.) walk bringing up Bella Angeli (Cowpens, S.C.) who deposited a ball over the center field fence for her first career home run to give Lander a 3-0 lead.

Claflin got a run back in the top of the fourth but that is all they would get off Alyssa Grimes (Plant City, Fla.) who recorded her first win of the season pitching five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts.

Lander started to create some separation in the fourth as they plated four runs. Derrick started the rally with an RBI double before being brough home by another Angeli homer to make it 6-1. Abbie Behe (High Point, N.C.) then joined in on the fun with a solo shot to right center to make it 7-1 and force a Claflin pitching change.

After Grimes retired the Panthers in four batters, Jordan Sikes (Anson, N.C.) brought home Rylee Omahen (Alpine, Calif.), who pinch ran for Raquel Camuglia (Spring Hill, Fla.) who walked to lead off the inning, on a fielding error to put Lander one run away from ending the game early. The Bearcats got that run on a Saje Jones single scoring Emily Allen (Mount Dora, Fla.) and giving Lander their first win of the day.

Game 2: Lander 8, Erskine 0 (F/5)

Lander struck quickly in the first inning as Behe launched a two-out solo shot to left field to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Bearcats plated two more on a two-RBI single from Sikes which made it 3-0 in favor of the home side.

Lander got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run off an error and another off a Sikes RBI single, giving her four runs driven in on the day.

After another scorless inning from Bailey Pattison (Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.), who struck out six in her five innings of work; only facing two batters over the minimum, the duo of Saje Jones and Naya Jones (Darlington, S.C.) drove home the three runs that Lander needed for the eight-run margin giving the Bearcats their third fourth run-rule win of the week.
