DAHLONEGA, Ga. – In their final regular-season game of the 2024 campaign, the Lander women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw on the road against North Georgia on Monday night. With the result, Lander closes the regular season with an 8-2-5 record and a 3-2-4 mark in Peach Belt play.
Those 13 PBC points placed the Bearcats in a three-way tie for fifth with Clayton State and Georgia Southwestern; the Lakers own the tiebreaker amongst the three by virtue of beating the Hurricanes head-to-head and tying Lander, while Lander tied both. Thus, the Blue and Gold are the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
Angele Hills was the lone Bearcat to register a shot for the game, and she made it count with it being a goal only 30 seconds into the night. Some nimble left-footed dribbling by
Emma Sexton – and a perfect pass to boot – set Hills up in front of the right side of the net and she buried it into the top-left corner for an early lead.
The Bearcats subsequently displayed their defensive prowess and didn't allow a goal in the first half while carrying the 1-0 lead into the break.
UNG, the No. 2 seed in the PBC, evened it at 1 apiece in the 68th minute for the final score of the game – a tightly contested shot that
Leah Hayes Coen got a glove on but couldn't quite stop.
Lander will play third-seeded Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla., on Saturday (Nov. 9) in the Peach Belt Tournament quarterfinals. The teams played to a 2-2 draw back on Sept. 21 at Saints Field. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
