Field Hockey Falls in SAC Quarterfinals to Mount Olive

GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey team struck early, but two unanswered goals from the Mount Olive Trojans and a strong defensive effort saw the Bearcats' season end in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals with a 2-1 loss on Monday evening at Frank Hill Stadium.

Lander ends the season at 10-7 while Mount Olive improves to 10-8. The Trojans will face top-seeded Newberry Friday in the SAC Tournament Semifinals at 5:30 PM in Newberry, S.C.

The Bearcats struck first as a shot by Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands) off a penalty corner was saved but the ball fell right to Iris Van Der Does (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) who slotted it home to give the hosts the early 1-0 lead.

From there, the Trojans were on the front foot the rest of the game as they outshot Lander 11-2 after the opening goal.

Mount Olive tied the game right before halftime as a ball snuck by Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands) on the near post. Then, just before the end of the third quarter, the Trojans added a second to give them the lead going into the final frame.

Unfortunately, Lander could not find any offensive footing in the final quarter as the Trojans defense saw out the win.
