Lander’s Strong Effort Falls Short in 2-0 Defeat to Clayton State

GREENWOOD - Despite a strong defensive effort, the Lander men's soccer team fell to the top team in the Peach Belt Conference, Clayton State, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Lander (2-7-5, 2-5-2 PBC) held Clayton State (11-2-3, 8-1-1 PBC) scoreless in the first half and showed promise with consistent offensive pressure, recording 15 shots compared to Clayton State's 9. However, Clayton State capitalized on their opportunities in the second half, scoring two decisive goals in quick succession.

The turning point came just after halftime, when Clayton State struck in the 51st minute, putting the Lakers up 1-0. Just two minutes later, CSU doubled the lead, leaving Lander unable to find an answer despite multiple attempts on goal.

The Bearcats responded with determined offensive efforts, generating multiple shots from players like Carson Graves and Zach Meyer, but the Lakers goalie was relentless.

Despite LU's pressure and several corner-kick opportunities, they struggled to find the back of the net. Christian Hatley had a strong shot that tested CSU's keeper, but we couldn't break through. As the clock wound down, the Bearcats pushed for a late goal but ultimately fell short, ending the match 2-0.

Lander will travel to Aiken, S.C., to face USC Aiken in the final regular-season conference match of the season on Monday, Nov. 4, with a kickoff at 7 p.m.
