Bearcats Dominate the Eagles in Straight Sets

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats delivered a powerful performance in Finis Horne Arena, sweeping the Carson-Newman Eagles in straight sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-22). With this victory, Lander improves to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the Peach Belt Conference, while Carson-Newman falls to 12-6 and 8-2 in SAC play.

"Our focus tonight was to take care of the small aspects, and if we focused on doing those things at a high level, everything else would take care of itself," said Head Coach Jeff Reynolds. "I think we saw one of our best performances of the season."

How it Happened

Set 1: The Bearcats came out strong in the first set, claiming a 25-21 win. Lander's hitting efficiency was on display early, with a .296 attack percentage compared to Carson-Newman's .206. Katie Miller led the charge for Lander, putting down crucial kills that set the tone for the rest of the match. Despite the Eagles' best efforts, including 13 kills, Lander's tight defense and key digs kept them ahead.

Set 2: Lander's momentum carried into the second set, where they outpaced Carson-Newman 25-16. This set highlighted the Bearcats' dominance as they recorded 16 kills with only four errors, pushing their attack percentage to .255. Lauren Dow led the offense with 30 assists, setting up her teammates and keeping the pressure on the Eagles defense. Carson-Newman struggled to find their rhythm, managing only a .021 attack percentage.

Set 3: The third set saw a tighter contest, but Lander remained in control, closing it out 25-22. Carson-Newman made a late push with 13 kills, led by Maddie Hurst and Taylor Keeran, but it wasn't enough to halt the Bearcats' momentum. Lander's balanced attack and clutch performance by Miller, who ended the night with 14 kills, sealed the deal. The Bearcats' defensive tenacity shone through, with digs by L. Dow (13) and Madde Blake (10) keeping the rallies alive.

Key Performances Final Thoughts

"I couldn't be more proud of our kids. Our serving and passing created the opportunities for us throughout the match that ultimately helped us prevail against a very good opponent," said Reynolds.
